"It was a night of huge accomplishments," said Coach Linda Moser about the State Swim Meet held at the UW Natatorium on Friday, November 11th. The 2016 Monroe/New Glarus High School Girls Swim Team ended their season on a high note.
Madelyn Hammer started the night full of confidence. Competing at state two years ago as a freshman, Hammer's nerves played a part in her events, the 100-Yard Freestyle and the 100-Yard Breaststroke. "This year was very different for her," explained Coach Moser. Hammer was seeded eighth in the 100-Yard Freestyle, and she tied for sixth place, with a personal best time of 53.70.
Nina Schiro swam in the 500-Yard Freestyle. Schiro was seeded 15th in the race. "It was evident before her race, first-time nerves were eating at her confidence," said Coach Moser. Schiro finished 16th, with a time of 5:37.13. "She was very disappointed in herself, but what she didn't realize was that she wasn't the only one in that race," said Moser. "Eight other swimmers out of 16 got out disappointed too because they had not swam their best times either. Nina had the tough job of one race later getting back in and overcoming those first time jitters." While Schiro didn't swim a personal best in the 100-Yard Backstroke, she was seeded 15th and finished 14th with a time of 1:02.27.
"It wasn't over for the girls though," said Moser. "Their last big race of the season, the 400-Yard Freestyle Relay was yet to come and for Nina, once again, a turn around of one race in between."
The relay team, consisting of Skylar Lassen, Emily Meritt, Nina Schiro and Madelyn Hammer were seeded 14th in the race, and swam to a personal best time of 3:45.49, which earned them 12th place. "A record breaking time because they broke a 13-year-old team record! What an amazing race to watch and what a way to end their season together!" exclaimed Moser.
Edgewood won the meet with 337 points, and McFarland took second with 224 points. Monona Grove, also in the same conference as Monroe/New Glarus, finished 15th. The Monroe/New Glarus Swim Team finished 20th with 26.5 points. Fort Atkinson finished 22nd with 25 points, Stoughton finished 37th with 2 points. A total of 38 teams represented Division 2.
Moser finished, "It was a night that will stick with them, with all of us, forever!"
