Ponies Bounce Back For Two Wins

The Monticello Ponies hosted Black Hawk on February 13th. Trailing 22-24 at the half, the Ponies and Warriors went back and forth in the second half with the Ponies coming out on top. The final score was Monticello 52, Black Hawk 49.
Black Hawk took an early lead, leading by as many as 9 points during the first half. Monticello held the lead by 1 for a brief moment before Black Hawk ended the half up by 2. In the second half the two traded leads, but Monticello went ahead for good with less than 5 minutes left in the game with Jackson Eyler scoring 8 of the last 11 points for Monticello on two baskets and four free throws.
Scoring 21 points to lead Monticello was Jackson Eyler, who also had 6 rebounds, while Peyton Smith scored 12 points with 6 rebounds and Ryer Indergand scored 10 points with 6 rebounds.
On February 14th, Monticello hosted Pecatonica. The Ponies trailed by 4 at the halftime break and again took the opportunity in the second half to outscore their opponent and win the game. The final score was Monticello 53, Pecatonica 49.
The game was tied five different times and there were seven total lead changes. The Vikings only had two players score in the first half. The Ponies took the lead for good with a little over 2 minutes remaining.
Jackson Eyler scored 16 points with 4 rebounds for Monticello, while Ryer Indergand scored 14 points and had 6 rebounds and Peyton Smith scored 7 points with 5 rebounds.
“Both of our games last week required us to fight back from second half deficits to win,” said Coach Mark Olson. “I am proud of the boys for not giving up, and for finding a way battle back. Once we had the lead late, we did a nice job of holding on to the lead and finishing off the wins.”
Monticello played at Dodgeville on February 20th. They will play at Albany on February 23rd. The Ponies have been seeded #10 for the WIAA Division 5 Tournament and will play on February 28th at #7 Cambria-Friesland. The winner will face the winner of the #2 Faith Christian vs #15 Madison Country Day game on March 3rd.
