On October 27th that horrific smell experienced in New Glarus on the 20th made its way to the Norsk Golf Club in Mt. Horeb, when Cheese Eaters Kohl Wegner and Jeff Buesser were skunked by Pranksters Laurel Grindle and Randy Cushman in the 4th game. As you can imagine, this didn’t set well with Kohl and Jeff. However, one consolation was knowing they would have a chance at revenge when they played Laurel and Randy again later that evening. In the meantime, Laurel and Randy continued to knock off one couple after another. By the end of the 7th game they were still perfect. Now the stage was set for the rematch with Kohl and Jeff. Thinking how easy it was the first time they played, Laurel and Randy were anticipating what could be, a perfect score. But Kohl and Jeff, wanting a little revenge, had different ideas. Play began with both couples earning a point here and there. But in the end, Jeff and Kohl got their revenge by holding Laurel and Randy to just 8 points, wrecking their perfect score. Although a score of 113 isn’t a score to be ashamed of, it wasn’t 120. That score, coupled with the 111 points recorded by Pranksters Dave Losenegger and Rodney Latham, was enough for the Pranksters to end the night 51 points ahead of the Cheese Eaters.

The other New Glarus team, the Kleeman Hay Shakers, have had their ups and downs this year, one week they record two perfect scores and the next week no one reaches 100. One nice thing about this week, they were able to play comfortably in New Glarus now that the smell moved on to Mt. Horeb. Other than that, and a 77-point win over the Pipe Benders, this week wasn’t anything special either. However, Jerry Judd and Fred Ryser did score 115 points for the Hay Shakers.

Only one team failed to have a single couple reach at least 100 this week, the Shufflers. The match between the two Red Mouse teams proved brutal for the Shufflers as Uff-Da took an early lead and never looked back. However, it is felt by many that Uff-Da may have played a little dirty. Just as the Shufflers were in the midst of a strong comeback, out of nowhere appears a bus load (maybe two) of college kids, all dressed up. The Shufflers felt this was an obvious and possible illegal ploy of distraction on the part of team Uff-Da. This distraction apparently affected Dewey Haag and Richard Laufenberg the most, as they recorded this week’s low score at just 83 points. The one bright spot of the night for the Shufflers was when League Secretary Stan Hook handed Tom Magnuson and Bruce Milestone a little family gift. You will have to ask them what it was the next time you see them.

In the match between the Cowboys and the River Rats, not only did Dean Disch and Harold Schlimgen record this week’s high score with 118 points, losing only their fifth game to Curt Beutel and Scott Keyes, they also beat Jack Gehin and Steve Ace in both the third and seventh games preventing them from a perfect score. Jack and Steve ended with 115 points. The Cowboys trailed the River Rats 5 of the 8 games, but pulled ahead when it mattered to win the match by 11 points to remain undefeated. Dean and Harold were the only Cowboys to break 100.

The Trolls remain winless after a 45-point stomping by the Express. That is not to say the Trolls didn’t apply some pressure to the Express. Just ask Opie Taylor and Steve Hoffmaster (Huffy), who were barely able to avoid a skunk in their first game of the evening when Lena Jackson and Roger Fager held them to just 1 point.

Standings: Cowboys 4-0; Uff-Da 4-0; Hay Shakers 3-1; Pranksters 3-1; Express 2-2; Cheese Eaters 1-3; Pipe Benders 1-3; River Rats 1-3; Shufflers 1-3; Trolls 0-4.

Schedule for November 3: River Rats @ Express (7:00); Pranksters @ Shufflers (7:30); Hay Shakers @ Cowboys (7:00); Uff-Da @ Cheese Eaters (7:00); Pipe Benders @ Trolls (7:00).
