Sugar River Euchre

Once again there were three teams that failed to have a single couple reach 100 points. But, before we identify those teams, let’s try to identify that horrific smell you may have noticed if you were traveling through New Glarus around 11:00 p.m., on the night of October 20th.
Uff-Da, isn’t that the Norwegian’s expression for a terrible smell? Well, Hay Shakers Fred Ryser and Al Zimmerman caught a direct whiff when they skunked Tom Magnuson and Bruce Milestone from team Uff-Da (what a convenient name for such an occasion) in the 7th frame. The odor apparently affected the Hay Shakers more than team Uff-Da, as none of the Hay Shakers were able to pierce the 100 points. Uff-Da hung on to win by 41 points, despite the failings of Tom and Bruce.
In their 82-point routing of the Trolls, led by Shuffler couples Randy Skogen and Ed Chancellor, with the assistance of Steve Vogt and Shane Kahl who all scored 112 points, the Shufflers captured their first win of the season. The Trolls had a rough night, with a 96 as their high score. At just 66, Trolls Lana Jackson and Jerry Pourch recorded this week’s low score.
With an extra player at his disposal, River Rat Captain Ernie Sarbacker kept score and watched from the sideline as his team falls to the Pranksters by just 9 points. The highlight for the River Rats came from Gordie Miller and Mark Raders, who lost only their 4th game securing 115 points, tied for this week’s high score.
The Express has had an unusual rough beginning to their season but were finally able to secure their first win at the expense of the Pipe Benders. Unfortunately for the Pipe Benders, I was not able to find a rule forbidding the Express from using thread, shavings discarded by the Pipe Benders, instead of sand for the much needed traction to a victory. At 115 points, Opie Taylor and Steve Hoffmaster were able to collect the most shavings and end in a tie for this week’s high score. Whereas, the best any Pipe Benders could do was to bend 98 feet of pipe.
The Cowboys remain undefeated with their 45-point win over the Cheese Eaters. With the failure of the Cheese Eaters to take down the Cowboys, the question is: will the much larger River Rats be able to defeat the Cowboys this week? Stay tuned!
Standings: Cowboys 3-0; Uff-Da 3-0; Hay Shakers 2-1; Pranksters 2-1; Cheese Eaters 1-2; Express 1-2; Pipe Benders 1-2; River Rats 1-2; Shufflers 1-2; Trolls 0-3.
