After some scheduling and venue issues were resolved, the 2021/2022 Sugar River Euchre League championship match is now in the history books.
Earlier this week all the talk was about how the North Carolina Tar Heels let a 15-point halftime lead slip away. This week the talk, at least among the Starlight Express players, will be how they let a fifth frame 32-point lead slip away. The answer is simple: the Kleeman's Hay Shakers got really serious, or lucky, depending on who you're talking to. The Hay Shakers picked up 27 points in the sixth frame by winning all four games. The seventh frame wasn't quite as spectacular, but they picked up another 12 points giving them a 7-point lead going into the eighth and final frame. After three of the four eighth frame scores were recorded, the Hay Shaker's lead was cut to just 6 points. So, the outcome of the match rested in the hands of Hay Shakers Barb Judd and Don Williams, and Engineers Opie Taylor and John Scheidegger. If Opie and John could win the final game by 7 or more they become the heroes and give the Starlight Express the championship title. A win by Opie and John of just 6 points would require an extra frame to be played to determine who would be crowned the champions. But a win of anything less than 6 points, or a loss, would push the match in favor of the Kleeman's Hay Shakers. Opie and John did everything they could to scratch out a win, but unfortunately for the Express they only won by 4 points giving the Hay Shakers team a 2-point win and the title.
For the Hay Shakers: Roger Truttmann and Jerry Judd had 101 points, Jeff Goebler and Al Zimmerman had 87 points, Rick Skindrud and Jeff Judd had 110 points, and Barb Judd and Don Williams had 88.
For the Express: John Scheidegger and Opie Taylor had 101 points, Dave Steinhauer and Steve Thoni had 103, Shawn Farrell and Dale Herfel had 82 while Charlie Steinhauer and Steve Hoffmaster recorded 97 points. As the losers of the match, the Starlight Express paid for the excellent meal prepared by the Starlight Bar & Grill.
The Captain's meeting for the 2022-2023 season will be held at Kleeman's on October 6, 2022, at 7:00 p.m. If you are interested in forming a team and joining the Sugar River Euchre League, please contact Stan Hook at stanhook73@gmail.com or (608) 279-9044.
