Monticello Girls Victorious Over Barneveld

On January 6th, the Monticello Ponies varsity girls basketball team hosted Albany. Down by 30 at the half, the Ponies lost the game. The final score was Albany 73, Monticello 24.

“Albany is a good team with a lot of girls who can score,” commented Coach Lori Brokopp. “We struggled with their pressure defense.”

Leading the Ponies with 9 points was Ellie Gustafson, while Dalana Trumpy scored 7 points, Sarah Brokopp scored 4 points and Sadie Wilkins and Karlee Wilkins both had 2 points.

On Saturday, January 8th, the Ponies played Highland at Just A Game Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells. The Ponies were trailing 9-41 at the half and lost the game. The final score was Highland 61, Monticello 28.

“They are a solid team that does not turn the ball over,” said Brokopp. “They also made eight 3-pointers and 10 different girls scored for them.”

Dalana Trumpy led Monticello with 15 points, while Ellie Gustafson scored 13 points, and Katelyn Eyler scored 1 point.

On January 14th, the Ponies hosted the Barneveld Eagles. Up by 7 going into halftime, the Ponies secured their victory in the second half. The final score was Monticello 63, Barneveld 44.

“Barneveld pressed the entire game. Their pressure started to get to us at the start of the second half and they got within a couple of points,” said Coach Brokopp. “We then took better care of the ball, attacked their offense and got a few key steals. We also rebounded very well.”

Leading the Ponies with 23 points and 14 rebounds was Ellie Gustafson, while Dalana Trumpy scored 20 points and had 5 rebounds, Sarah Brokopp put 6 points on the board and had 8 rebounds, Karlee Wilkins scored 7 points and had 5 rebounds, Jaden Zuber scored 4 points, Katelyn Eyler 2 points and Sadie Wilkins contributed 1 point to the win.

Monticello played at Orangeville on January 18th. They will host Pecatonica on January 20th and play at Benton on January 24th. The Lady Ponies are currently 2-3 in the Six Rivers East and have an overall record of 6-6.
