Middle Row (L-R): Coach Molly Delwiche, Whitney Disch, Annika Ziperski (All-Conference), Melody Fink (AC), Lily Maynard (AC), Joe Quaglia (AC), Evan Guenther (AC), Braylon Hoesly (AC) Desi Delforge, Coach Dennis Haak. Not available: Ben Collins, Dane Duerst, Tanner Gardner.

Joe Quaglia focuses on winning conference at the sound of the gun. Passing the first mile at 5:14, we know a season best is in the works but Carter Scholey, a talented freshman from Belleville, leads the race early. Carter pulls away during the race then finishes in 16:47, Joe in 17:12. Quaglia is still gritting his teeth as his NGM teammates, Evan Guenther (17:24) and Tom Nelson (17:35), blast through the chute going 2nd, 3rd and 4th. A Columbus runner sneaks in before Braylon Hoesly (17:47), Brayden Ryan (17:52), Ty Ready (18:06) pile in 6th, 7th and 8th. As Conor McCoy (18:30) pops through in 10th, the Capitol Conference Championship is wrapped up by our New Glarus-Monticello boys before the computer processes the numbers. NGM wins, with 22 points to B'ville's 56, Columbus's 60 and Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld's 77. Last year our guys won by one point. This year, the team finished on top by dominating the course and escaping a COVID outbreak. Accomplishing both tasks seems as fortunate as last year's upset win. Joe and Carter face off next week in the Division One Stoughton Sectional. The freshman-senior battle continues.

Deja vu for New Glarus-Monticello fans in the girls race, as Wisconsin Heights' Sam Herrling leads through the mile and wins the individual championship in 20:31. NGM's Lily Maynard (20:47) runs stride for stride with Sam for the first half-mile and holds a strong pace to cross the line just 16 seconds behind. Our supporters witness three more gals in NGM royal blue uniforms stacking-up in the chute with Annika Ziperski (21:20), Dayna Karls (21:34) and Melanie Fink (21:37) following Lily as the team records 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th places. To finish the scoring we need a fifth runner. Coming into view is B'ville's Alora Spiegel. Looking down the course we spot Tenley Faber (22:23) closing fast. Her downhill sprint excites the crowd and that yelling produces an immediate reaction from Alora. She starts accelerating but Tenley comes from behind at full speed. From a distance we see a virtual tie, but the electronic timer gives the Wildcat a 0.3 second win. None-the-less Tenley's 9th place, Emma Martinson's (22:54) 10th and Lucy Melvin (23:36) put another Conference Team Championship trophy on the New Glarus-Monticello bus. NGM 22 pts, Belleville 56, Columbus 60 and Wis. Heights incomplete. The gals compete at the Stoughton Sectional next Saturday. With only one division in CC this spring we face formerly D1, D2 and D3 schools. We're looking for an upset in the land of Norwegians.

Our JV girls, Whitney Disch (25:27) and Devi Duerst (33:51), run unopposed for a moral victory.

The JV boys score a perfect 15 pts by hogging the first six places and taking ten of the next 13 spots. Passing the finish line in order: Ian Schwartzlow (19:18), Desi Delforge (19:38), Griffin Ness (19:36), Linden Lounsbury (19:54), Beckett Malaise (19:57) and Aiden Runkle (20:34). A few Wildcats mix in with our New Glarus-Monticello JVer's as Collin Blum (21:39), Ben Collins (22:19), Triston Koch (23:09) and Carter Ness (27:35) make us proud.
