Rudy Wicker goes up for 2 Monday night during the Ponies' win over Randolph.
On December 21st, the Monticello Ponies were given a chance to host Randolph, who, if you recall, knocked the Ponies out of the Regionals last March. With a 32-21 lead at the half, the Ponies settled into the second half nicely and got the win. The final score was Monticello 63, Randolph 45.
With 5:15 left in the first half, Randolph was leading by 4 points when the Ponies went on a 17-0 run to close out the half. Randolph cut Monticello's lead to 6 points with just over 11 minutes left in the first half, but the Ponies finished the game on a 29-17 run to win it.
"We did a better job on their big guy than last year, but he still had 18," explained Coach Mark Olson. "The difference in the game was a couple spurts where 3s fell for us and didn't for them. It was good to get a win against a good team before Christmas break."
Leading the Ponies with 27 points and 9 rebounds was Peter Gustafson. Owen Ace, Rudy Wicker and Logan Blum all scored 8 points. Wicker had 5 rebounds, while Ace and Tristin Flanagan had 4 rebounds each.
On December 29th, Monticello played at Evansville. On January 5th, they will host Barneveld and on January 7th they will travel north to play at New Glarus.
