Ponies to Start Tournament Seeded #1 in Division 5

Monticello senior Simon Blohowiak had five rebounds in the Ponies' win over Pecatonica.
The Monticello Ponies boys basketball team played at Pecatonica on February 27th for their last game of the regular season.
The Ponies began the game on a 10-0 run in the first 3 minutes of play, and led 37-18 at halftime. With a little over 15 minutes left in the second half, the Ponies were up 42-22 and then went on a 20-2 run to go up by 38 with less than 11 minutes left in the game. The closest the Vikings could get was 20 points for the rest of the game. The final score was Monticello 82, Pecatonica 49.
Leading the Ponies with 21 points was Peter Gustafson, while Owen Ace and Devin Holtz both scored 15 points and Reece Rufer scored 13 points and had 9 rebounds. Simon Blohowiak pulled down 5 rebounds.
The Ponies ended the regular season with an overall record of 21-1. They won the Six Rivers East Conference with a 12-0 record and are ranked third in Division 5 on the wissports.net Coaches Poll (as of February 25th); along with third in the AP Wisconsin prep basketball poll (rankings for games played through February 23rd), which is voted on by a statewide panel of sports writers and broadcasters. Monticello received a bye for the first round of WIAA Regionals and is seeded #1 in Division 5. The Ponies will host the winner of the #9 Pecatonica vs #8 Black Hawk game on Friday, March 6th. Tipoff is at 7:00 p.m. Winner plays the next night, Saturday, March 7th, at a place to be determined against #5 Central Wisconsin Christian, #12 Juda, #13 Albany or #4 Argyle, at 7:00 p.m. Sectionals begin Thursday, March 12.
