Sugar River Euchre
January 9, 2020
The New Year brought a new team and new bar owners into the Sugar River Euchre League family. Riley Tavern’s new owners, Chuck and Kate Teasdale (welcome), played host to the Riley Shufflers and the league’s new team, the Tyrol Trolls. The Riley Shufflers quickly took on the role of teacher/destroyer. Ed Chancellor and Dave Herfel played the headmaster role by contributing 114 points to the Shufflers’ 79-point win. Not a single Troll couple broke 100, and with two of their experienced league players, Dave Hook and Steve Merklein, scoring just 70 points (this week’s low score) it was easy pickings for the Shufflers. The Trolls even got LB (Tom Burns) to fill in for a couple of games until Andy Amacher arrived. Unfortunately for LB, Andy didn’t arrive until after Stan Hook and Shane Kahl gave LB and Tyler Wipperfurth a 2 in the fourth round. Welcome to the League, Trolls.
Cowboys Roger Olstad and Randy Schmid weren’t quite as nice to Kendal and Keith Wenger in the third round as Stan and Shane were to LB and Tyler. It was at that point Roger and Randy saw fit to give the league’s first skunk of the second half to Kendal and Keith. The rest of the team didn’t fare much better, as 91 was the Cheese Eaters high score. Whereas, 91 was the low score for the Cowboys. Don Field and Steve Dower shot 113 rounds, while Dave Field and Harrold Schlimgen roped in a 115 points as did Roger Olstad and Randy Schmid for this week’s high score. The Norsk Cowboys keep their winning streak alive with a 104-point win.
J&M Bar also got off to a rough start in the second half with none of the River Rats breaking 100 in their match against the Norsk Pranksters, who had three of their four couples exceeding 100 points. Larry and Dave Losenegger delivered the most tricks, with 110 to their credit, in the Pranksters’ 42-point win over the Rats.
In the match between Kleeman’s Hay Shakers and the Riley Mounties, the Mounties went down by 6 after the first round and continued on a downhill slide until the seventh and eighth rounds, where they reclaimed some ground to end the evening 49 points short. Jeff Judd and Don Williams stacked up 111 points for the Hay Shakers.
The 112 gallons of water pumped by Jerome Krantz and Ross Neshiem for the Pipe Benders just wasn’t enough to stop the Harley Blue Express. The Express created just enough steam to submerge the plumbers by 19.
Standings: Harley Blue Express 1-0; Kleeman’s 1-0; Norsk Cowboys 1-0; Norsk Pranksters 1-0; Riley Shufflers 1-0; J&M Bar 0-1; Jones’ Plumbing 0-1; Riley Mounties 0-1; S’Wisco Taphaus 0-1; Tyrol Trolls 0-1.
