Sugar River Euchre
November 14, 2019
After what started out as a 4-point deficit at the completion of three rounds for the New Glarus Cheese Eaters, the match quickly turned for the worse when the Harley Blue Express opened the throttles and sped down the tracks to a 42-point win. John Scheidegger and Steve Thoni (Express) pulled 112 points up the hill for the Express in an effort to deliver what would be the first win of the season for the Express. Fellow teammates Opie Taylor and Steve (Huffy) Hoffmaster, after scoring just 2 points in the eighth round, added to the delivery with 105 points of payload. This all happened under the whiskers of Jeff Buesser and Giff Hoesly (S’Wisco Taphaus Cheese Eaters) who had to burrow into the cheese stores to generate enough energy to scurry around a couple of skunks. They scored just 3 points in both the fourth and fifth rounds to end the night with 77 points, this week’s low score.
Jones’ Plumbing had to pull all the tools out of the job box to get a 15-point win over the River Rats. Tony Hoffman and Ross Neshiem (Pipe Benders), losing just their second game to Dan Palmer and Ernie Sarbacker, were able to effectively utilize all their tools, roughing in 115 points for the Pipe Benders.
The Norsk Cowboys, hoping for their sixth win and for a Riley Shufflers’ loss, got their wishes answered. The roundup of their opponents, the Norsk Pranksters, was orchestrated by Don Field and Harold Schlimgen as they branded 117 head for this week’s high score. Teammates Ferdie Schmitz and Marvin Thompson also kept the irons hot, branding another 114 more head for the Cowboys.
In the match between the Riley Shufflers and the Kleeman Hay Shakers, the Shufflers took an early 1-point lead before the Hay Shakers stacked up an 11-point advantage. But, by the end of the sixth round, the Shufflers fought back to pull even. By the eighth frame the Shufflers were once again down by 7, and desperately needed everyone to win their last game to have a decent chance of remaining undefeated. All did their part except for Steve Vogt and Stan Hook, who were unable to hit each other’s hands. They finished the game with just 6 points, leaving the Shufflers 3 points short of a win. Derek Skogen and Ed Chancellor dealt up 113 points for the Shuffler’s, while Barb Judd and Don Williams stacked up 112 points for the Hay Shakers.
