First Row (L-R): Ray Valentine, Collin Blum, Alexa Thayer, Dayna Karls, Tenley Faber, Annika Ziperski, Ian Schwartzlow, Will Carnes, Molly Molencamp, Dylan Noll. Second Row (L-R): Garrett Grossen, Griffin Ness, Carter Ness, Triston Koch, Logan Blum, Tom Nelson, Beckett Malaise, Braylon Hoesly, Aiden Runkle, Conor McCoy, Coach Delwiche. Third Row (L-R): Owen Runkle, Collin Gould, Jude Rice, Linden Lounsbury, Landon Schneeberg, Brayden Ryan, Simon Blohowiak, Evan Guenther, Dane Duerst, Joe Quaglia, Desi Delforge, Ty Ready, Adam Nelson, Lucas Fink, Ryan Winder, Coach Haak, Coach Wehrley, Coach DeNure. Missing from photo: Whitney Disch, Eric Zielinski and Tristin Flanagan.
Annika Ziperski (21:16) pops out of the woods and banks around the turn. Only 400 meters away, but in the last quarter of a mile, things can change. Everyone finds some sprint in their legs the moment they view the finish chute. Annika makes sure no one closes the gap behind and finishes 4th. A full minute later two Wisconsin Heights runners cross, with Tenley Faber (22:31) 1 second behind. Dayna Karls (22:52) and Molly Molencamp (23:14) chase B'ville's Tayler Yapp. One, two, three Deerfield/Cambridge gals appear and put that team in contention. Nine seconds later Whitney Disch (23:42) crosses the line and we've earned 44 points. At this moment the race is still undecided. If anyone else finishes five and it totals fewer place points, they win. Wisconsin Heights runner, Samantha Herrling (19:42), finished first so they might still take the race. Fortunately WH and D/C and Marshall race hard, get all mixed in and each adds enough points to each other, along with our Alexa Thayer (25:53) and Dylan Noll (29:59). New Glarus-Monticello pulls off the upset and girls win the Capital Conference South Cross Country Championship!
The last thing the varsity boys hear before the gun: "Our girls won!" Maybe that gives the NGM guys a boost. The gentlemen stay close to Deerfield/Cambridge for two miles on Poynette's Shepherds Meadow golf course and the final, difficult mile through the woods. Christian Patzka (16:31) from Wis. Heights wins the race with three Deerfield/Cambridge guys heading to the finish line. Our Adam Nelson (17:46) needs to catch at least one of them for NGM to have a chance in this race. The D/C's cross unmolested, with Adam 4 seconds behind. Immediately Joe Quaglia (17:57) and Evan Guenther (17:58) follow. D/C has only 9 points and we've got 18 at this moment. Both teams need to finish two more runners. Ty Ready (18:13) and Conor McCoy (18:19) almost beat a Marshall kid but clearly out sprint another runner and the fourth D/C guy. We've got 37 points with our scoring five across. D/C has 21 at this moment with one more guy to cross. Our Tom Nelson (18:32) and Braylon Hoesly (18:39) finish with two more boys behind. The sixth and seventh runners do not score, but they do take spots away from other runners. Today Tom and Braylon help push the fifth D/C boy into 17th place. Deerfield/Cambridge earns 38 points. Amazingly, we allowed three D/C athletes in ahead of our first runner but still win the Capital South Capitol Conference Championship by 1 point.

On Saturday afternoon the New Glarus-Monticello Cross Country Teams were escorted through New Glarus by the New Glarus Fire Department. After arriving in Monticello, the students and coaches rode through town on Monticello's fire trucks, after posing for photos.
Our twenty-some JV boys know that both varsity teams won conference championships. What can they do to make their day memorable? Adrenaline must be high as Jude Rice (18:44) immediately takes the lead. By mile one, Brayden Ryan (19:08), Linden Lounsbury (19:20), Simon Blohowiak (19:29), along with Jude, hold down the first 4 spots. Our Garrett Grossen (19:33) battles with a Deerfield/Cambridge guy. Cross country aficionados recognize that Garrett needs to beat this competitor for us to do the near impossible: finish 1,2,3,4 and 5 to score a perfect 15. Garret exits the woods and starts sprinting. It's no contest. He finishes 7 seconds ahead and the JV guys set a team record: the perfect 15!
The boys JV D/C finishes second but then the next echelon of New Glarus-Monticello Boys, Desi Delforge (19:47), Logan Blum (20:07), Dane Duerst (20:40), Beckett Malaise (20:43), Aiden Runkle (20:48), Ray Valentine (22:42), Ian Schwartzlow (23:06), Lucas Fink (23:56), Collin Blum (24:10), Landon Schneeberg (24:27), Ryan Winder (24:48), Carter Ness (24:55), Collin Gould (26:45), Eric Zielinski (27:35) and Triston Koch (28:14), place third of all the Capitol Conference Junior Varsity teams.
Next week the New Glarus-Monticello Cross Country teams travel to Spring Green for the Division 2 Sectional Race. The course is fast, at least five of the sixteen teams arrive with legitimate chances to go on to the State Meet. Can the NGM'ers find a way to drop a few more seconds from their fastest times?
