The NGM Knights faced Marshall on Friday, September 20, 2019, and came away with a 33-7 win.
On Friday, September 20th, the NGM Football Team traveled to Marshall for the first conference game of the season. The Knights forced an early turnover when Jackson Darrow recovered a fumble. The Knights drove down inside the five-yard line, but were not able to score and the first quarter ended with the Knights with the ball and a 0-0 score.
The Knights struck first early in the second quarter on a 38-yard touchdown pass from Mason Martinson to Nathan Streiff. Connor Siegenthaler added the extra point for a 7-0 lead. The NGM defense forced the Cardinals to turn the ball over on downs and the Knights went on a drive that culminated in a 16-yard pass from Martinson to Josh Wieser. Again, Siegenthaler added the extra point for a 14-0 lead. The Cardinals were able to score right before half and the halftime score was 14-7.
The Knights scored early in the 3rd quarter on a 7-yard pass again from Martinson to Streiff. The extra point was blocked and the score was 20-7.
Early in the 4th quarter, the Cardinals were threatening and drove down to the 3-yard line. The NGM defense was stout and held the Cardinals out of the end zone. The Knights took over at the 3-yard line and the line of Brock Hummel, Deven Vasquez, Jackson Darrow, Cole Walter, and Reece Rufer asserted themselves as Connor Siegenthaler methodically carried the ball down the field. The Knights used an eleven play drive that was capped by a Mason Martinson run of 7 yards. Siegenthaler added the extra point and the Knights led 27-7.
The Knight defense once again flexed their muscles and shut down the Cardinal offense. The Knights, back on offense, once again drove down the field. This time, Robert Chenoweth was the catalyst. Chenoweth carried four times for 40 yards. Martinson finished the drive with a 5-yard run. Ben Copeland ended any Marshall threat with a late interception as the Knights cruised to a 33-7 win.
On the evening, Nathan Streiff tied a school record with 10 catches in a game and set a new record with 207 receiving yards. Martinson finished 13-22 for 246 yards and three touchdowns. Siegenthaler led the Knights with 87 rushes on 16 carries. Defensively, Cole Walter led NGM in tackles with eight, including two tackles for loss. Jaxson Darrow added seven tackles and a fumble recovery.
The Knights return home this week to face the Cambridge Blue Jays for Homecoming. The game starts at 7:00 p.m.
