Ponies Take Down Orioles

Peter Gustafson drives in for a basket Tuesday night as the Ponies took a loss to the Barneveld Eagles.
The Monticello Ponies boys basketball team hosted Barneveld on January 8th. Down at halftime 23-35 due to an 11-0 run by Barneveld in the last five minutes in the half, the Ponies couldn't muster up enough momentum in the second half to overcome the Eagles.
Peter Gustafson led the team in scoring with 17 points and had 7 rebounds. Jeffrey Ace scored 14 points and had 7 rebounds and Reece Rufer scored 9 points and pulled down 13 rebounds.
The Ponies played at Argyle on January 11th. After jumping out to a 14-0 lead to start the game, the Ponies almost lost it when Argyle followed that with a 15-2 run to cut Monticello's lead to a single point with under two minutes left in the half, but the Ponies fought back and were leading 19-17 headed into the locker room. The Orioles led early in the second half until the Ponies went on a 7-0 run. The game was tied with less than five minutes to go, but Devin Holtz hit a 3-pointer to push the Ponies ahead. Monticello won the game, 37-32.
Leading the Ponies with 17 points was Peter Gustafson, who also had 10 rebounds. Reece Rufer scored 9 points and had 10 rebounds and Simon Blohowiak scored 8 points. Jeffrey Ace pulled down 9 rebounds.
The Ponies host Juda on January 17th and will play Benton at home on January 22nd.
