NGM Falls Short in Home Opener

Knight Jeff Ace (80) attempts to avoid a Lake Mills defender.

Friday, August 24th, capped a week that will no doubt be remembered by NGM football fans for its flood and storm...and the weather was not very good either. Lake Mills, a team from the Capitol Conference North Division, came to town with a chip on its shoulder, having been soundly beaten the week before. They must have spent an inordinate amount of time in the film room as they scouted us thoroughly, with emphasis on shutting down our offensive game. Accordingly they were rewarded with a 35-0 victory at our expense.

The stats pretty much say it all: Lake Mills had 13 first downs to our 7; they had 144 net yards rushing to our 0; they had one turnover while we had four. Largely it was the Moen-Pierce Show as these two players accounted for all five Lake Mills touchdowns. Robert Chenoweth managed 18 hard fought yards to lead NGM in rushing.

For the most part the first half was a draw and NGM was still very much in the game, despite having spotted Lake Mills 14 points. The second half brought the second wave of Lake Mills flooding. Three unanswered touchdowns served up a healthy plate of humble pie for NGM. Credit the Lake Mills defense in large part as they kept our offense in check and out of the end zone the entire game.

In the end it was a toxic mixture of missed tackles, turnovers, and a few select inopportune penalties (which allowed sustained drives) that proved fatal. Sometimes you're the bug and sometimes you're the windshield. This NGM team has experienced both in the first two games of the season.

The next game is this coming Friday, as NGM plays host to Columbus. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
