Wildcats Fall Short at Regionals
May 31, 2018

Belleville's Cassidy Heller was recently named to the Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association (WFSCA) Senior All-Star team. This is quite an achievement, as she was selected for this team by coaches from all over the state. The All-Star games will be held on June 12, 2018, at Woodside Sports complex in the Wisconsin Dells.
On Saturday, May 19, the Belleville softball team headed south on Highway 69 to face Monticello. Belleville won in five innings, 26-16.
"The big story in this game was the pitching. Monticello struggled to put the ball across the plate and had many wild pitches and passed balls," said Belleville Coach Connie Wunschel. "We also were trying out a new pitcher in Abby Winterburn. I thought she pitched well enough and was under control, but could not locate the strike zone. She faced 17 batters, walked 12, gave up 4 hits and 15 runs."
As a team, the Wildcats had six hits and walked 20 times. The Ponies had five hits, struck out ten times and had 13 walks.
For the Wildcats, Kori Rogers was 1x1 with two runs scored and one RBI, Bailey Legler was 1x2 with two runs scored, three RBIs and one stolen base, Maddie Weber was 1x1 with four runs scored, Ella Campbell was 1x4 with two runs scored, four RBI and a double, Jenna Shrader was 1x2 with one run scored, one RBI and a stolen base and Abby Winterburn was 1x2 with three runs scored, one RBI and one double.
For Monticello, Claire Klossner was 2x4, two runs scored and one RBI and Hannah Zanow was 1x2 with three runs scored, one RBI and one double.
Cassidy Heller started on the mound for Belleville, pitching for two innings. She faced seven batters, striking out one, walking none. Maddie Weber came in, striking out three straight batters at which point the coach put Abby Winterburn in. Weber faced 10 batters, striking out six and walking one.
The Ponies started Claire Klossner on the mound, she struck out one and walked 15. Pfeuti relieved Klossner during for the last inning, walking five.
The Wildcats ended their season at one game over .500, tied for third with Waterloo for the conference.
On May 23rd, #5 Belleville played at #4 Cuba City in a WIAA Regional game, losing 10-0 in five innings.
"I really thought we had a chance to win this game, had we only came in ready to play, and play like we did vs Marshall and Heights (the last two games of season). But, we came out flat," said Wunschel. "Our two bright spots were Cassidy Heller pitched a pretty good game, and Maddie came in relief and did the same, and our 1st inning double play. I thought that might kick us in the pants and get us fired up, but their strong pitching left us doubting ourselves."
Cassidy Heller was the only team member who managed a hit, she was 2x3.
Heller pitched for three innings, striking out one, walking two, giving up eight hits and eight runs. Maddie Weber took over for Heller, pitching two innings, facing eight, giving up two hits and two runs.
