Ponies Defeated by Comets

February 8, 2018

The Monticello Ponies girls basketball team played at Albany on February 1st. Trailing by only 4 points at the half, the Ponies lost steam in the second and lost to the host team, 39-60.

“The first half was probably one of the best halves of basketball that we played this year.  We played with confidence and a defensive effort that we haven’t had consistently this year,” said Coach Mark Gustafson.  “Unfortunately we were not able to keep it up in the second half.  Hopefully we can get more consistency and put together a full game before the season ends.  Albany is a very well coached team and they were able to take advantage of their inside presence.  Alyssen Noriega played well for us and we were able to get contributions from many of our girls.”

Alyssen Noriega led the Ponies with 15 points. Miah Brokopp, who was 2-3 from the free throw line, contributed 7 and Lindsey Pence and Mackie Errthum scored 5 points each.  Several other Ponies contributed points and all the top scorers sunk a 3-point shot.

The team hosted Argyle on February 6th. On Friday, February 9th they will host Juda and then they head to Barneveld on February 15th for their last game of the regular season.
