The white-tailed deer mating season is undoubtedly the best time to be a deer viewer or photographer. Bucks, in particular, are now most active, at nearly all times of the day and night.
As they cast aside their usual caution and fear of humans, these males often hold their ground, particularly if there is a doe bedded in the vicinity. Bucks are unlikely to leave unless the doe runs away.
In addition to being less cautious, bucks are commonly seen in open fields, as well as wooded areas, making viewing, photographing and capturing clear shots easier. Deciduous vegetation is mostly clear of leaves, too.
Whitetails vocalize with hog-like grunts at this time, suggesting photographs are likely to show a buck's mouth partly open as though he's out of breath. Any captured action makes a photograph much more interesting than a standing animal.
