“Youth is wasted on the young.” -George Bernard Shaw. Not this Saturday! The New Glarus-Monticello CC boys team runs without any seniors or juniors. All seventeen register as freshmen or sophomores and race undaunted at the Verona Wildcat Invitation, populated by bigger schools and older athletes. First across the finish line for our team is freshman Connor McCoy (18:13), then sophomore Adam Nelson (18:41), freshman Ty Ready (20:00), freshman Dane Duerst (20:03), freshman Joe Quaglia (20:12), sophomore Garrett Grossen (20:18) and sophomore Simon Blohowiak (20:34). Varsity guys defeat Wisconsin Dells by 1 point, and place 4th in the small school division.

“The youth is the hope of our future.” -Jose Rizal. The junior varsity boys come within 2 points of Oregon to end up 16th of the 22 teams. In his first race of the season freshman Rudy Wicker (19:32) breaks twenty minutes and earns a future varsity spot. Sophomore Kellan Zweifel (20:40), sophomore Robert Burt (21:25), sophomore Ryan Austin (21:36), freshman Griffin Ness (22:51), sophomore Lucas Fink (23:35), freshman Desi Delforge (23:56), sophomore Eric Zielinski (25:25) and freshman Keegan Kemp (28:15) make-up the rest of the squad.

“Youth is the gift of nature, but age is a work of art.”-Stanislaw Jerzy lec. Three hundred sixty junior varsity girls line-up and slapdab in the middle stands our Libbie Melvin. The girls display a little more maturity than their counterparts and Libbie is one of the three juniors. She finishes smackdab in the middle of the herd with a twenty seven (27:00) flat.

“Youth has no age.” -Pablo Picasso. Seniors Gabby Whistler (24:00) and Walela Three-Sticks (24:34) lead the team with sophomore Molly Molencamp (24:46), freshman Dylan Noll (29:24), junior Emily Streiff (30:31) and freshman Samantha Burgess (30:22) representing the gals.

“Fame is the thirst of youth.” -Lord Byron. Eleven Middle School Boys dominate their race in the following order: Evan Guenther, Tom Nelson, Beckett Malaise, Braylon Hoesly, Aiden Runkle, Ian Schwartzlow, Raymond Valentine, William Carnes, Carter Ness, Knolan Kemp and Landon Schneeberg.

“Youth comes but once in a lifetime.” -Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Six Middle School girls ignore the gender of their competitors as they pass boys and girls with equal aplomb. Eighth graders Karley Michels and Dayna Karls are followed by Tenley Faber, Whitney Disch and Rachel Niceschwander. They finish ahead of most other young athletes.

“So curiosity, I think, is a really important aspect of staying young or youthful.” -Goldie Hawn.
