Belleville Softball Had Tough Week

April 20, 2017

On Saturday, April 8th, the Belleville softball team played at Orfordville Parkview against Parkview and Evansville.

The first game, against Orfordville Parkview, the team lost 7-0. Freshman Maddie Weber was on the mound in her first varsity start, pitching three innings. She faced 17 batters, giving up seven hits, six runs/five earned, striking out three and walking none. Cassidy Heller took over and struck out three and gave up two hits and one run.

Cassidy Heller, Jillian Michaels, Allie Kowalski, Brianna Halvorson and Anna Nolden each had one hit.

The second game was against Evansville, and the team lost 10-0 in five innings.

Cassidy Heller, Allie Kowalski and Maddie Webber each had one hit.

“We are improving every day. We start two to three freshman, and three sophomores, so we are young,” said Coach Connie Wunschel. “We need to keep learning and growing and stay the course and things will improve!”

On April 10th, the team hosted Cambridge and lost, 7-2.

“Once again the opposition came out strong, stringing four straight hits, with two of them off the first pitch they saw,” said Wunschel.

Ella Campbell was 2 for 4 at bat, while Jillian Michaels was 2 for 3 with one run scored. Cassidy Heller started the game as pitcher, and struck out six while walking three. Maddie Weber took over, facing eight batters and striking out three while walking two.

On April 11th, the team hosted Marshall, losing 0-12 in five innings.

“We had only four hits in the game, but as a team we only struck out four times,” said Wunschel. “This means we are putting the ball in play and eventually they will become hits.”

Starting pitcher was Cassidy Heller. She gave up seven hits in the second inning. Maddie Weber pitched the last three innings, giving up four runs on five hits.

Cassidy Heller was 2 for 3 at bat, and Jillian Michaels was 2 for three.

The team was scheduled to play at Watertown Luther Prep on Thursday, April 13th, but upon arriving, there was no one there. They hosted Black Hawk on Monday and Poynette on Tuesday, and will host Argyle on April 20th.
