Ponies Play in Cambridge Tournament

 


The Monticello Ponies boys basketball team played in the Cambridge Tournament on Thursday, December 29th.

Their first game was versus Cambridge. After Cambridge jumped out to a 10-point lead, the Ponies came back to tie the game during the first half but right before halftime the home team went on a 13-3 run and the Ponies were down by 10 at the half. The Ponies hustled during the second half to catch up but weren’t able to get closer than 7 points. Cambridge went on a 11-2 run to close out the game. The final score was Cambridge 69, Monticello 49.

Jon Errthum led Monticello with 16 points and five rebounds. Zach Price scored 13 points. Reece Rufer put 8 points on the board and had five rebounds. Braden Gafner also had five rebounds for the Ponies.

In the afternoon Consolation Game, the Ponies faced Oakfield. The Ponies played hard in the first half, keeping the game close, but Oakfield closed out the half with two 3-pointers to go up by 12. The Ponies continued their momentum in the second half, but Oakfield still managed to win the game. The final score was Oakfield 60, Monticello 40.

Leading the Ponies in scoring was Reece Rufer, who scored 13 points along with having three rebounds. Zach Price put 12 points on the board. Jon Errthum scored 5 points and had three rebounds, and Braden Gafner pulled down three rebounds during the game.

The Ponies played at Madison Country Day School on January 3rd, and at Argyle on January 6th. They have an overall record of 1-9.
