Sugar River Euchre
Thirty-two players gathered at Kleeman’s in New Glarus for the Sugar River Euchre League Mid-Winter Tournament last Thursday night. With the temperatures dipping into the single digits, boy did it ever feel like winter. This was especially true for Shawn Farrell and Don Williams who recorded the evening’s low score of just 73 points.
However, Harold Schlimgen and Jeff Judd weren’t bothered by the frigid temperatures as their thermometer easily rose to a 120 points while giving up a total of only 67 points for the evening. This is the second straight tournament a perfect score was recorded by a first place couple. Second place went to Derek Skogen and Erik Massey with a formidable 110 points. Jerry Judd and Dean Disch took third with 108 points, while Harold Grabandt and Mike Doyle finished with 106 points for a fourth place finish. Rounding out the upper echelon were Steve Vogt and Opie Taylor, plus Barb Judd and Steve Hoffmaster, who tied for fifth place with 103 points.
At the end of the tournament, League President Jerome Krantz announced the tournament winners and awarded trophies for the 2015/2016 season. The traveling League Championship trophy went to Hooterville-Express with each team member also receiving an individual trophy. The team consisted of: Opie Taylor (Captain) Steve Hoffmaster, Shawn Farrell, Tracy Haag, John Scheidegger, Dave Steinhauer, Charlie Steinhauer, Dale Herfel, Eric Blabaum and Steve Thoni. Perfect score trophies for last season were given to: George Eichelkraut, Jeff Buesser, Dean Disch and Mike Doyle. Dean and Mike’s perfect score occurred during the spring tournament. Jeff Judd took home the high average trophy with an average of 104.333 points per match. This season’s first half averages, weekly high and low scores, skunks and perfect scores were also posted for players to scrutinize. Thirty players, playing at least three matches, accumulated averages of 100 or more points during the first half of the current season. The evening was capped off with a fantastic buffet prepared by Barb and Mel Judd, which was enjoyed by all.
Schedule for December 22: A first half playoff match between Kleeman’s Hay-Shakers and the Norsk Cowboys will be held at Norsk Golf Bowl in Mount Horeb at 7:30 p.m.
