Sugar River Euchre

What was the famous newsy saying heard on many street corners back in the mid-twentieth century, “EXTRA, EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT IT!”? Well, we had an evening worthy of that type of hype. Eagle Heights was soaring higher than a kite when they welcomed Kleeman’s into their nest in Barneveld. With the match playing out to be a close one, the Screaming-Eagles much have realized they were ravished as they devoured their guest beating the Hay-Shakers by 21 points.

In Hooterville, the Norsk Cowboys could hear the screech of the Eagles enjoying their feast. That is when Tom Schlimgen and Mike Pickett knew it was time to get serious themselves. They holstered their six-shooters and took control of the Gatling-gun. With their perfect score, Tom and Mike put 120 holes in the Hooterville-Shufflers leading the Cowboys on to a 44-point victory. Being the brave men that they are, Derek Skogen and Steve Vogt took the brunt of the Cowboys attack to end the evening with this week’s low score of 75 points. Once the hay had fallen from the nest in Barneveld and the smoke cleared from the Hooterville air, it was clear that a playoff match between Kleeman’s and Norsk would be needed to determine the first half winners.

A close match between the Shenanigans-Pranksters and the Hooterville-Express ended with the Pranksters pulling out of the station 2 points ahead cruising into a three-way tie for third place with Mounties and the Shufflers. Monte’s Mounties held the Pipe-Benders just south of the border with a 13-point win putting Jones’ Plumbing in a four-way tie for sixth place. While the Cheese-Eaters of New Glarus kept the River-Rats at bay and winless for the first half of the season with their 9-point victory over J&M Bar.

Other scores deserving mentioning were recorded by Mary Humphrey and Tom Magnuson’s 114 points for the Mounties, Jeff Judd and Al Zimmerman’s 113 points for Kleeman’s, Mark Losenegger and John Ott’s 111 points for Jones’ Plumbing, Tracy Haag and Steve Hoffmaster’s 110 points for Hooterville-Express, and Dave Herfel and Randy Skogen’s 110 points for Hooterville-Shufflers. Oh, by the way, Barb Judd wanted everyone to know that she and Jeff Goebler had an 81 for the second lowest score this week.

Standings: Kleeman’s 7-2; Norsk Golf Bowl 7-2; Hooterville-Shufflers 5-4; Monte’s 5-4; Shenanigans 5-4; Eagle Heights 4-5; Hooterville-Express 4-5; Jones’ Plumbing 4-5; New Glarus 4-5; J&M Bar 0-9.
