Loshaw Gets 10-Point Buck

Twelve-year-old Matthew Loshaw of Belleville shot this 10-point buck on Saturday at his family's Grant County farm.

Matthew Loshaw, a student at the Belleville Intermediate School, was hunting with his father, Chris, under the Youth Mentor program on their Grant County farm on Saturday.  Matthew shot a doe last year but decided he wanted a buck this year.  Any size buck would do.

Proud father Chris explains, "We climbed into a tree stand about 3:30 p.m.  Twenty minutes later I spotted a deer on the far side of the valley and told Matthew to turn around slowly.  Using his binoculars, he verified it was a doe.  All of a sudden three more doe stood up from hiding in the field of grass below us.  We now had four doe in our sights.  I told him to keep watching.  A buck might show up soon.  A few seconds later Matthew said, "Here comes another deer and it's a buck."  I looked at the deer and said, "It sure is and it's a big one."  The buck was walking down the hill on the other side of the valley.  I told Matthew to get in a better shooting position slowly.  I then handed him the rifle and told him to let me know when he has the buck in his sights.  Matthew said he was ready.  As soon as the buck stepped into an open area I yelled out "Baaaa!"  The buck stopped.  I told Matthew to take the shot.  Matthew shot once.  The buck dropped in his tracks and slid down to the bottom of the hill.  It was all high fives after that.  Usually when you shoot a deer you get "ground shrinkage" but this deer got bigger the closer we got.  The buck is 10 points with a 19 inch spread."
