Soccer Team Wins Second Straight Capitol Conference Championship
In a conference showdown match that would determine who would win the title, the Raiders answered the challenge by soundly defeating the Lodi Blue Devils. A large crowd added an enthusiastic element to the night as the Raiders were able to create scoring opportunities while stifling Lodi's ability to score. The win gave the Raiders victories in all their conference games this season.
Junior Taylor Legler was a dominant force in the game as she scored two goals and had an assist. Junior Vanessa Narveson and senior Hannah Donlin also found the net for the Raiders and contributed to an impressive offensive effort.
Senior Paige Natzke had a commanding night in goal with 19 saves, including stopping a penalty kick in the first half. Lodi's scoring attempts were denied by a strong Raider defense until the last minute of the game when Lodi was able to score on a penalty kick. Final: Sugar River 4, Lodi 1.
A victory added excitement to a night that celebrated senior contributions to the Raider program. Senior players Ja-ae Borth, Whitney Brown, Jeana Burkeland, Hannah Donlin, Skylar Eicher, Kendell Goecke, Baily Hubbard, Breanne Kreklow, Paige Natzke, and Jamie Ott, along with managers Max Holden, Lacy Krahenbuhl, and Rachael Schieldt, were recognized. Their leadership led the way to an amazing season.
Heading into postseason play, the Raiders were awarded the number one seed in their region. The Raiders record of 17-3-1, going undefeated in Conference play, and ranking of fourth in state gives the team momentum and confidence. The first regional game will be held in Belleville on Thursday, June 4, at 7:00 p.m.
