The Green County YMCA Gators swim team has had a busy last few weeks! The Gators is a year round YMCA and USA swim team that is made up of swimmers from around the area, including Monroe, New Glarus, Broadhead, Albany and Mineral Point.
They competed in three state swim meets over the last month. Starting with the 12 and Under State meet at the end of February, the Gators sent 13 swimmers that scored a total of 191 points and finished 14th out of over 60 teams. Eli Zimmerman and Mekenzie Hammer, both New Glarus, had multiple top eight individual finishes, including two state titles by Eli.
The relay, made up of Zach Meighan, Mason Yaun, Eli Zimmerman and Jacob Piper, also scored top eight.
The following weekend, the Gators had two swimmers represent at the 13 and Over State swim meet. Madelyn Hammer from New Glarus competed in six events, the maximum that you can swim, and was ranked top 16 in multiple events.
The Gators finished their season at the YMCA state meet in Milwaukee, March 20-22. The Gators sent 24 swimmers to compete in the meet. The Gators had 36 top eight finishes, including four 3rd place finishes, seven 2nd place finishes and 11 state titles.
Swimmers that placed top eight were Ellie Eichelkraut (New Glarus), Jadyn Elgin (Monroe), Morgan Erstad (New Glarus), Gianna Ferreri (Monroe), Madelyn Hammer (New Glarus), Mekenzie Hammer (New Glarus), Grace Keith (Monroe), Ruth Marty (New Glarus), Keeley Mulligan (Monroe), Mazie Paradis (New Glarus), Alyssa Roelli (Mineral Point), Bryce Roelli (Mineral Point), Elsa Schaefer (Monroe), Breckyn Thompson (New Glarus), Mason Yaun (New Glarus), Eli Zimmerman (New Glarus) and Simon Zimmerman (New Glarus).
The five swimmers who brought home State Titles for the Gators were Morgan Erstad, Mekenzie Hammer, Mazie Paradis, Mason Yaun, and Eli Zimmerman, who are all from New Glarus. The Gators ended up scoring 760 points, the most that they have ever scored!
