New Glarus Volleyball Places Second at Iowa-Grant Tourney

At the Iowa-Grant tournament last weekend, the New Glarus volleyball team placed second, falling to Dodgeville in the championship match.

They won their first match against River Valley, 25-12 and 25-10.

Maddie Macht had 12 kills, nine digs, and three aces. Vanessa Narveson was the leader in digs with 10 while Devon Boll tallied nine. Alex Nealis finished this matchup with 15 assists.

The next faced off against Mineral Point where they won in a third set (25-22, 21-25, and 15-11).

Macht had 11 kills and three aces. Boll had four kills and 14 digs while Narveson amassed 17 digs. Kati Way struck two aces, and Nealis earned 18 assists.

The Glarner Knights then met up with Dodgeville in pool play, losing 25-28, 21-25, and 7-15.

Macht had five kills, 14 digs, and two blocks; Boll accumulated four kills while Nealis had a strong showing at the service line with two aces and 14 assists. Teammate Narveson totaled 18 digs. Strong at the net for the Glarner Knights were Julia Barnaby with three blocks and McKinley Righter with two.

Up next for New Glarus was Portage with the Glarner Knights victorious, 25-21, 21-25, and 15-12.

Again, Macht had a strong performance with 15 kills, 11 digs, and two aces. Righter earned 10 kills, and Narveson led the team with 20 digs. Boll amassed two aces and two blocks while Nealis had a team-high of 29 assists.

The Glarner Knights met a familiar foe in Dodgeville to faceoff in the championship match. Dodgeville got the better of New Glarus, 25-23, 20-25, and 11-15.

Macht stepped up to the challenge in this match earning 16 kills, 11 digs, one ace, and one block. Boll had 13 digs and one ace, and Narveson tallied nine digs and one ace. Nealis totaled 26 assists while Barnaby had one block.

Earlier that week on Thursday, September 17, the Glarner Knights downed Cambridge in four sets, 25-21, 14-25, 25-22, and 25-13.

"Way and Boll both had great nights in terms of serving. Way had 20 attempts and Boll had 18 attempts with only one error between them. Overall, it was a great night for New Glarus," stated Head Coach Kelsey Schmit.

Macht tallied 10 kills, two blocks, and one ace while teammate Righter had five kills and two blocks. Narveson amassed one ace and 36 digs. Boll had an ace; Way also had one ace and nine digs. Nealis led the team in assists with 22.

Last Tuesday, the Glarner Knights lost to Waterloo, 11-25, 21-25, and 16-25.

Narveson had seven digs while Macht earned eight digs, two aces, and 11 kills. Lydia Sprecher totaled three kills, and Nealis tallied 20 assists.

"We've been working on less hitting/serving errors and had major improvements in this area tonight," said Schmit. "The girls were aggressive and played hard against a good team. Overall, I'm proud of our performance tonight."
