And they're off! The Boys Cross Country teams headed up the hill behind the high school at Saturday's Capitol Conference Cross Country meet.
The Alphorns play perfectly note for note. Dozens of parents take-up duty stations. The officials run the meet on time to the second. Everything working as designed, except for one thing.
Every twelve years, New Glarus-Monticello hosts the Capitol Conference Cross Country meet. The school campus provides the only unflooded Green Country turf, so we measured loops around each of the practice fields and loops around the school. When we reached 5,000 meters (3.1 miles) we drew a finish line and proclaimed it our new course. After planting three dozen directional flags and spraying several miles of lines, the course was ready for action.
The twelve conference teams showed up by 8:00 a.m., jogged the course, used the bathrooms and lined-up for the Boys Varsity race at 10:00AM CDT. Everything working as programmed.
Deerfield/Cambridge's Wills M (18:18) crosses the line before us, as expected. Our Conor McCoy (18:30) is right behind. Now it's time for our Adam Nelson (19:04), Joe Quaglia (19:05), Evan Guenther (19:08) and Rudy Wicker (19:16) to pile in before their boys. Instead D/C's Zach (18:35), Jack (18:58) and Austin (18:59) sneak and streak across the line. We expect Ty Ready (19:40) and Garrett Grossen (20:03) to push their Jonathan (19:21) back into the pack, but he runs the best time of his season and leaves us behind. Final score: D/C 30 points and New Glarus-Monticello 39. Heights, Marshall, Waterloo and B'ville follow NGM. Second feels better than third but there's only one trophy and we planned to keep it here.
The NGM varsity girls team of Dayna Karls (23:42), Molly Molencamp (24:33), Annie Fuller (25:29), Libbie Melvin (27:12), Alexa Thayer (27:39), Dylan Noll (28:03) and Emily Streiff (28:31) pull off a close one by scoring 122 points to sixth place Waterloo's 123.

NGM Cross Country runners Adam Nelson, Joe Quaglia and Evan Guenther race on Saturday in New Glarus. Nelson has been named to First Team All-Conference and Guenther and Quaglia have been named to Second Team All-Conference.
Boys junior varsity athletes sprint down the wood chipped covered finish lane and repeat our varsity results. Deerfield/Cambridge scores boys in spots 1,2,5,9,11,12 and 15. New Glarus- Monticello Logan Blum (20:51) 4th, Beckett Malaise (21:13) 6th, Griffin Ness (21:34) 10th, Braylon Hoesly (22:12) 14th, Lucas Fink (22:42) 16th and Bryce Stampfli (23:10) 18th. Desi Delforge, Aiden Runkle, Ryan Austin, Eric Zielinski, Triston Koch and Will Carnes come through in a back-up roll. Final score for JV boys: D/C 28 and NGM 42. Second place of six teams.
NGM's JV representatives Sam Burgess (32:21) and Brooke Dreyfus (33:03) finish the last and muddiest race of the day. And, it's time for awards.
Our Dayna Karls receives recognition for Girls Second Team All-Conference. Conor and Adam are First Team All-Conference. Joe, Evan and Rudy take a bow for Second Team All-Conference.
Swiss musicians develop perfection through practice. We've got one more week of practice to improve. The B & G Cross Country athletes head to Spring Green for the Sectional Race this coming Saturday. Maybe we'll have another chance to Tout Our Horn.
