Raiders Soccer Season Comes to an End after Loss to Edgewood

Finish Season 19-4-1

Wendy Goist Jones

The Sugar River Raiders soccer team lost their matchup against the Edgewood Crusaders 2-1, ending their championship season.

The Raiders' championship soccer season (19-4-1) came to an end in a sectional game against the Edgewood High School Crusaders. The Raiders, with a number one seed and hosting the game, dominated play in the first 45 minutes of the game. Jackie Burgess scored the lone goal in the first half and gave the Raiders the lead at half with a score of 1 to 0. The second half saw the Crusaders put the ball in the net for the equalizer and then in the 76th minute of the game, score the game-winning goal. The Raiders had many scoring opportunities but were unable to pull out a win.

The Raiders' standout season included winning the Capitol Conference and their regional championship, going undefeated in conference play and obtaining a ranking of number four in the state. The true measure of a championship team was united players, playing the game cohesively as a unit with skill and class. Saying goodbye to the season and senior players produced tears, hugs, and a great deal of emotion, but hopefully, the players will look back and see all they accomplished this year. Final: Edgewood 2, Sugar River 1.
