Amstutz-Marty American Legion History and Raffle
In 1919, after WWI, Congress allowed the Legion to organize for Vets that served in war time, then in 1920 Monticello Post #256 Amstutz-Marty was chartered; so now we are 95 years old.
So to celebrate, we are having a raffle of a Henry rifle (Big boy shoots .38 and .257), valued at $1,000, two prize weekends for two at the Chalet Landhaus in New Glarus, valued at $300, one pizza every month for a year from Gempeler's Supermarket in Monticello, valued at $168, a regular size quilt, a crib quit and crocheted shawl. The drawing will be held at 9:00 p.m., during Monticello's Homecoming celebration, at the Village Park on July 12, 2015.
Our Legion supports Camp American Legion at Tomahawk, where a Veteran and helper (spouse) can stay for one week, professional people come from Milwaukee and Madison to help heal any Veteran from Wisconsin able to go, with a Doctor's signature. We also sell poppies, participate in Government Days, award two scholarships, Badger Boy and Girl. We put flags on Veterans graves for Memorial Day at five cemeteries (two in Monticello, one at Washington Church, one at Shook Prairie, located off of CTH J, and St. Francis) – a total of 428 flags. It is like a history lesson to see those markers. We could always use more help to put the flags out. We also support Badger Honor Flight and Vets Roll, which is four days to Washington, D.C., to view the sight (by bus). Ten Badger buses, 200 vets, 100 helpers and 75 wheel chairs – a once in a lifetime trip. We now have 81 members, both men and women, but are still looking for more so that they can attend meetings.
We will start selling our Raffle Tickets at the Monticello Fire Station on May 16, 2015, and will also have a booth at Dairy Days on May 30, 2015. You can also call John at (608) 214-4963, Barb at (608) 293-0903 or Mike at (608) 938-4508 for tickets. You have to be 18 years old to buy raffle tickets and the winner of the Henry rifle must have a background check.
Please wear a poppy, as the money goes to Veterans and their family's relief fund and is used for Veterans in need.
Vice Commander of Post 256
