Nina and Francesca Schiro both grew up in New Glarus and graduated from the New Glarus High school, in 2019 and 2021. They both started their swimming right here in New Glarus with the Sugar River Rapids Swim Team over 12 years ago. In addition, they swam together on the Monroe-New Glarus High School Swim Team and competed at the WIAA State Championship together on a relay team. Nina and Francesca both transitioned on to their respective college swim teams. Nina is currently a junior at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, and also an Airman 1st Class in the WI Air National Guard. Francesca Schiro swam to three top six finishes and the 800-yard freestyle relay squad established a school record to highlight UW-Oshkosh's list of performances at the 50th Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Championship (Presented by Culver's) that concluded four consecutive days of competition Saturday (Feb. 19) at the Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer. Francesca, a freshman, contributed freestyle times of 53.47 seconds for fourth place at 100, 1:57.07 for fifth place at 200 and 24.64 seconds for sixth place at 50 yards. Her times in all three events were season bests. Francesca additionally helped Emma Hall, Cadence Showalter and Brianna Smith generate a school record with their fourth-place time of 7:59.50 in the 800-yard freestyle relay.
Nina and Francesca have worked extremely hard to keep up their grades while swimming and working as a care taker and life guard. Their parents are proud of the amazing young women they have become. Their strong work ethic and leadership abilities contributed to their swim team successes.
The Schiro parents are grateful their children, including Samantha, got their start in the pool with Sugar River Rapids coached by Kayla Zimmerman and continued swimming with the Green County Gators and the high school swim team. Swimming has been a big part of the Schiro family's lives and they feel blessed to have these memories to cherish.
