NG-M Qualifies for Playoffs with Win over Cambridge

Trey Taylor looks to move the football down the field as Dezmond Hanenberger is out in front blocking for him. The Knights defeated Cambridge, 38-19, only allowing their opponent to score in the fourth quarter.

At home on Friday, the New Glarus-Monticello football team dismantled Cambridge, 38-19.

In the second quarter, Trey Taylor ran the ball for a 43-yard touchdown. Just a few minutes later, Austin Schlueter had a one-yard run for a touchdown. Finally in the second quarter, Taylor had an interception for a 41-yard touchdown.

Taylor scored the lone touchdown in the third quarter on a 54-yard run.

Cambridge finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter with a 17-yard rushing touchdown. NG-M fired back with a 43-yard run by Gavin Binger for NG-M's fifth touchdown of the night. Cambridge then scored a passing touchdown but was unsuccessful on the extra point. Bryce Eichelkraut made a 40-yard field goal for three. Cambridge earned the last touchdown of the night, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Knights. Cambridge scored all their 19 points in the last quarter.

"Friday's game against Cambridge was great. We finally played at the level we knew we could for a whole game and in all three phases. It was a fast, physical game with great respect and sportsmanship between both teams. Also, both teams love to play that physical smashmouth style of football," explained Head Coach Desie Breadon. "Offensively, we wanted to run the football and did it well. It was so much fun to watch and coach. Cambridge knew exactly what and where we wanted to run, but they couldn't do anything to stop it. I've told the players for years that's the type of offense you want, where you can walk up to the line and tell them you are going to run it right here and there's nothing they can do to stop it. The blocking was the best it has been all season, especially downfield by the receivers."

In total, Cambridge had 31 carries for 150 yards while NG-M had 47 carries for 382 yards. Cambridge had five passes for 148 yards, and NG-M had only one pass for 30 yards. Overall, Cambridge had 298 yards compared to NG-M's 412.

Taylor led the way in rushing yards with 23 carries for 221 yards and two touchdowns while Schlueter had 10 carries for 67 yards and one touchdown. Additionally, Binger had seven carries for 68 yards and a touchdown.

Binger was one for four for thirty yards. Schlueter was the only NG-M player to catch the ball; he had one catch for 30 yards.

"Defensively, we continue to improve. We tackled well and shut down a team that has been explosive both on the ground and through the air. They had a couple big plays in the fourth quarter, but for the first three quarters, we were able to stop them. Our defensive backs did a great job on coverage; they played tight and physical which messed with Cambridge's passing game a lot. In the fourth quarter, we also hit a 40-yard field goal by sophomore Eichelkraut; it is really nice going into the playoffs knowing that you have another weapon like that," stated Breadon. "We qualified to the playoffs with the win and continue to improve."
