Two Sugar River Wrestlers to Compete at State Tournament

February 11, 2021

Joe Quaglia will make his third trip to the State Tournament.

Two Raider wrestlers competed at Sectionals on Saturday, at Richland Center. Both of them had good matches and are WIAA Individual State qualifiers.

At 120 pounds, freshman Mason Mau went 4-1 on the day. His only loss came in the semi-finals, with a score of 3-2, to the eventual champion.

"Mason wrestled with a lot of passion today, especially his win in his third place match, in order to wrestle back for 2nd place," said Coach Pete Swenson. "That match was back and forth, but Mason stuck to his technique and continued to push pressure on his opponent with good riding and constant shots from his feet."

At 132 pounds, senior Joe Quaglia will be making his third trip to state. This puts him as one of the elite wrestlers to ever wrestle for the Raiders.

Mason Mau wrestled at 120 pounds and came in second at Sectionals.

"For Joe, his day did not start the way he wanted. Losing a close match 3-2 to the eventual champion, Joe came storming back with four straight wins. Like Mason, Joe's biggest match was winning his 3rd place match against a strong opponent who beat him last week at Regionals," said Swenson. "This week he was more confident on his feet. He was on a constant attack."

"This will be a season to remember for many reasons. I am so proud of everyone on the team and their time and commitment throughout the season. Due to the hard work of all teammates, Mason and Joe have the chance to compete at state," concluded Swenson. "A match is up to the individual, but it takes teammates to push each other and get better day after day. This was a wonderful group of individuals to work with through this unprecedented season. However, I know there are some unfinished business."

This year's state tournament will be hosted at Adams-Friendship High School on Saturday, February 13th.
