Peter Erich Etter, New Glarus, WI, died peacefully on June 14, 2022, at the age of 80 at SSM Health in Monroe, WI.
Peter is survived by his wife, Sharon Etter; his children, Michael (Cara), Kristina (Dave), Marcus (Jessica). Peter will also be remembered fondly by his four grandchildren, Claudia, Layla, Tyler and Trisha; and sisters, Brigitte Lopez and Elsa Lax.
Peter was predeceased by his mother and father, Fritz and Luisa Schnook; and brother, Ernie Schnook.
Peter was born on September 11, 1941, in Lauenstein, Germany, immigrating to Waukesha, WI, shortly after WWII where he attended Waukesha High School and furthered his education at UW-Milwaukee and UW-Whitewater, earning Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education Administration. On August 1, 1964, he married the love of his life, Sharon, and they raised three children over their 57-year life together.
Peter's love of education and teaching led to a career that spanned over 40 years in the Wisconsin education system. For twenty-one of those years he served as the Superintendent/Elementary Principal of the New Glarus School District. Special moments of Peter's career include pioneering the German Exchange Program (GAPP) and developing the New Glarus Youth Soccer Program.
Passionate about his German heritage, Peter was very active in the many ethnic festivals in the New Glarus community. Over the course of the years Peter would participate in many different festivals and clubs including the Männerchor and Jodlerklub, emceeing events, to playing roles such as "Gessler" the Tyrant in the Wilhelm Tell play. He would also enjoy entertaining the many tourists visiting the Swiss Historical Village and the Chalet of the Golden Fleece Museum.
In retirement Peter enjoyed traveling the US and Europe, visiting many historical and natural places. When at home Peter loved spending time with his grandchildren and family. His woodworking hobbies can be seen around the community, with many different wooden shields displaying "coat of arms" or bird houses lining the fence posts on country roads surrounding New Glarus.
A funeral service was held at 6:00 p.m., on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at the New Glarus High School Gymnasium, 1701 Second Street, New Glarus, WI. Rev. Ronald Nybroten will officiate. A visitation preceded the funeral service from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the New Glarus High School Gymnasium.
The Zentner-Beal Funeral Home of New Glarus is assisting the family.
