Martha Rohner Hug, age 89, passed away peacefully at Drumlin Reserve, in Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, on Friday, February 11, 2022. Her family knew she would be welcomed home in Heaven by her beloved husband and many family and friends who passed before.

Martha Maria Hug was born in Steinach, Switzerland, in 1932. The daughter of Emil and Bertha Hug, Martha grew up in the rolling hills of St. Gallen, on a large farm family with 10 sisters and two brothers. She always had a good story to tell about life in a big family. Her childhood was one of strong Catholic faith and helping orphans from World War II, along with becoming a French au pair. As a young woman, Martha chose to immigrate to the United States in 1957 to marry the love of her life, Rudolph (Rudy) Rohner.

Martha was a devoted mother to three boys, whom she loved dearly.

Being a mother, providing and cooking for her sons, and eventually her grandchildren, was her pride and joy. Martha was also a support to her husband throughout the years, helping him establish a successful printing company in Chicago. Martha and Rudy were proud of being American citizens without losing their strong ties to their homeland of Switzerland.

They took multiple family vacations back to Switzerland, along with being members of the Swiss Benevolent Club of Chicago, and life-long members of the Swiss Club of Chicago. It was through this organization that they made many friendships that became family to them over the years.

They also made many Swiss connections in the New Glarus area, where they purchased land and built "The Chalet" on the cliff overlooking the town. Martha and Rudy became very active members of this community, and were original partners in the Chalet Landhaus. Many weekends were spent with friends and family at the New Glarus Hotel or the Landhaus enjoying food, wine, and having fun.

As a couple, Martha and Rudy enjoyed life to the fullest, traveling, golfing, hiking, skiing, gardening, and entertaining. Martha was passionate about cooking and her meals were often compared to a five-star dining experience by family and friends.

Upon her husband's passing in 2018, Martha continued living at Brookdale Assisted Living in Oak Park, IL, until this past year when the family moved her to Drumlin Reserve Memory Care in Cottage Grove, WI. She was a very happy resident and would tell stories of her family, the love of her life, and yodel for the staff from time to time.

Martha will be greatly missed by her sons, Philip (Stephanie) Rohner, David (Heather) Rohner, and Bruno (Victoria) Rohner; along with eight grandchildren, Eric (Leah) Rohner, Aubrey (Billy) Stuessy, Kaleigh Rohner, Alexander Rohner, Christopher Rohner, Nicholas Rohner, Claudia Rohner and Marta Rohner; and four great-grandchildren, Brooks Stuessy, Seth Rohner, Shea Stuessy, and Natalie Rohner.

A special thank you from the Rohner family goes out to Brighton Hospice Care of Middleton, Wisconsin, and the Drumlin Reserve staff in Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, for their kindness and help at the end of Martha's life.

A private celebration of life will be held with immediate family members present.
