Last week the New Glarus Public Library received two grants from the New Glarus Community Funds Fall 2021 Grant Cycle of the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, Inc. An award of $2,600 will allow the purchase of a mobile scanning kit to convert photographs, slides, and negatives into digital format. The scanning kit will be available for in-library use by community members, and may be shared with local organizations such as the Historical Society or other groups with scanning needs.

An award of $2,297 will support a project titled, 'Mapping Our Community: Middle School Perspectives'. This partnership between the library and the New Glarus Middle School will help students learn more about their world and will give students an opportunity to work individually and collaboratively to draw and stitch maps of the New Glarus area using various media. In October, Sue LeVan-Green of Quilts of Valor gave a presentation to the 7th and 8th grade art students where she discussed the history and techniques of quilt-making and the mission of her organization to support veterans in the community. The speaker showed many handmade quilts as a way to launch into the quilted map project. The students' artistic maps will be installed in the new library, showcasing youthful perspectives of the world.

Photos of the middle school project will soon be available for viewing in an online gallery at http://www.youarehereNGPL.org.
