November 11 is Veterans Day.

Thirty-five countries fought in World War 1. They fought for five years.

Finally, the countries stopped fighting. The leaders signed an armistice.

They signed the armistice on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. It meant the war was over.

Americans were very happy to hear the war was over. The soldiers would be coming home.

People were so happy they went out in the streets and danced. They blew horns and whistles; bells rang. Songs were sung. They thought there would never be another war.

President Wilson made November 11th a holiday. A time to remember the end of the war. The day was called Armistice Day.

At 11:00 in the morning, everyone stopped whatever he or she were doing and stood silent for one minute. This minute was to remember all the soldiers who died in wars.

On June 1,1954, President Eisenhower signed legislation changing the name of the legal holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day.

What is a Veteran?

A soldier who served his/her country whether active, discharged, retired or through the reserves. Who, at one time in his/her life wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America.” For an amount of “up to and including his/her life.” For this wonderful gift of peace and freedom we have only one person to thank - the American Soldier! So, if you know someone that has done all this for you send a card, shake a hand, give a hug. They deserve our respect and gratitude.

On Wednesday November 6, 2019, at 7:00 p.m., at the Belleville High School Gymnasium, come together as a community and give them thanks for their service. Honor our Vets for their service to their country and all of us.
