A Tribute to Virgil Matz

Virgil Matz received a national meritorious service award in 2015 for his efforts on the national Civil War database. Presenting the certificate was Tad Campbell of California, then the national commander in chief of Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.

I worked with Virgil Matz for years in gathering and submitting several thousand names to the Wisconsin graves database of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.

Virgil Matz did meticulous walkthroughs of every cemetery in multiple counties from the very outset of the Sons' graves registration program 20 years ago, and even earlier than that for local groups. He was in on the early planning of the program and became part of the national committee that oversees it.
