Alvah H. Weaver Jr., age 88 of Belleville, passed away on Saturday, July 1, 2017, at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison. He was born on December 24, 1928, at Port Matilda, PA, to his parents, Alvah Sr. and Ellouise (Adams) Weaver.
Al entered the U.S. Navy in 1949 and was trained to be a Corpsman. He was then assigned to the U.S. Marine Corps and served one tour in Korea and three tours in Vietnam, he was also stationed at Seal Beach, Oceanside, and San Francisco, CA, Seattle, WA, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, PA, and Norfolk, VA. His overseas duty also included Australia, the Mediterranean, the Pacific, and the Atlantic. Alvah's only assigned sea duty was on the Aircraft Carrier Kula Gulf. He retired to the Fleet Reserve in 1972 from the Norfolk Naval Air Station. At the time of his retirement from service, he was listed as a Physician's Assistant.
While stationed at the Pittsburgh Naval Reserve Office, Al met Katherine McCormick-Richards and they were united in marriage December 18, 1969, in Winchester, VA. Following his retirement from the Navy, Al and Kathy moved to Wisconsin and then settled in Belleville in 1975. Al was a member of the Belleville VFW and Duppler-Smith American Legion Post #460, Zor Shriners, and Masonic Lodge #310 in New Glarus. He had also served as a Boy Scout Leader. In 2013, he traveled on the Badger Honor Flight with his daughter, Nancy, and in 2014 was presented with a Quilt of Valor that was made by his wife, Kathy.
Al is survived by his wife, Kathy; five children, Marjorie Long, Alan (Carol) Weaver, Leah (Jeffrey) Hageman, Emily Rudder, and Nancy (Craig) Ontl; twelve grandchildren, Breanna (Mason) McKernan, Melody Long, Tessa Ward, Travis (Carrie) Hageman, Anthony (Sara) Hageman, Autumn Hageman, Devon (Brandi) Overbee, Ryan Overbee, Sean Rudder, Jonathan Rudder, Benjamin Ontl and Lauren Ontl; eight great-grandchildren; four stepchildren, Ann (Kenneth) Roche, Jim (Cameron) Richards, Jean (Michael) Hampton and Ruth (Richard) Hands; eight stepgrandchildren, Jennifer and Tyler (Sophia) Roche, Andrea (John J.) Frankovich, Nicholas Richards, Melissa (Tom) Messer, Robert Hampton, Richard and Kathryn Hands; and five great-stepgrandchildren. He is further survived by his brothers, Clarence, Paul, Dorie and Rueben; sisters, Waiva Huddy, Mary Ward, Jane Lapp, Betty Beckwith and Marlene Davis; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Wesley and Carl; and a grandson, Adam Long.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, July 6, 2017, at the Becker-Beal Funeral Home, 109 Greenway Cross, Belleville, WI, with the Rev. Kenneth L. Schaub officiating. Full military honors will be accorded after the memorial service. Per Alvah's request, he will be buried at sea.
A Masonic service will be held at 10:45 a.m., prior to the memorial service.
A gathering of relatives and friends will precede the Masonic service from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., on Thursday, July 6, 2017, at the Becker-Beal Funeral Home in Belleville, WI.
