Daniel E. Richardson

Daniel Edward Richardson, husband of Melissa Maas Richardson of Belleville, passed away on March 23, 2017, at age 40 at Hospice Het Vliethuys in Voorburg, Netherlands.  He was born on September 29, 1976, in Crewe, England.

The son of Rev. Harvey and Carol Richardson, Dan grew up in southern England and later graduated from Southampton University, where he studied geology and teaching.  Dan was a science teacher in England before deciding to pursue a career in overseas teaching.  Dan met his wife, Melissa, while teaching at Seoul Foreign British School, in Seoul, South Korea, in 2006.  The couple united in marriage at Primrose Lutheran Church in Belleville, Wisconsin, on July 12, 2008.  Dan was mechanically-minded and enjoyed motorcycling, weight lifting, radio controlled car building, and traveling.  In the summer of 2010, Dan moved with Melissa to the United States where he became a beloved middle school science teacher at Stuart Country Day School in Princeton, New Jersey, while Melissa attended Westminster Choir College there.  Two years later, the couple began teaching at the American School of the Hague in The Netherlands, where Dan served as a fifth grade science teacher, student council advisor, and robotics club leader.  Dan was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Brain Cancer in 2014, and underwent extensive treatments in the Netherlands.  He fought courageously with grace and strength in mind and body with Melissa by his side until the very end.  One highlight after treatment was their eighth wedding anniversary cruise to the Norwegian fjords. They received support from their community of friends and family around the world. Dan will always be remembered for his gentle soul, integrity, and friendly character.  Dan loved visiting Wisconsin and enjoying the outdoors while biking, bird watching, snowshoeing, and helping on the family farm.
