Design Workshop for New Belleville Library and Community Center

The Belleville Public Library Board of Trustees invites the public to share their ideas regarding how additional library space and public meeting space could be used during a design workshop on March 9-10.

After much careful thought during the library’s strategic planning process and the village’s municipal facility study, the Library Board and Village Board have agreed to create a larger, more versatile library for Belleville. The new Library and Community Center will bring people together, support learning through all stages of life, provide community gathering space, and enrich the lives of our community members.

“This is an important project for Belleville,” said Library Board President Linda Schmitt. “We want to hear from as many people as possible about what they would like.”

The architect team from FEH Design will be at Belleville Public Library to talk with the public about what features and functions they would like to see in this new facility and to sketch their ideas. The public can drop in between 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., and 1:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m., on Thursday, March 9, and Friday, March 10. Each evening at 6:00 p.m., the public is invited back to review the day’s work and help choose the best designs.

Possible uses for the new space include expanded children’s and teen areas, meeting rooms ranging from small study rooms to large multi-purpose room with kitchen facilities, computer lab, quiet spaces, creative and technology lab space, a local history area, more comfortable seating areas, and larger collection space.

On November 7, 2016, the Village Board passed a resolution supporting the construction of a new Library and Community Center. The Village is in the process of purchasing property near Library Park for the new building. The project will require that $1 million in private funds be raised. Committed volunteers are working to meet that challenge.

“The leadership of more than 100 extraordinary women who each pledged $1,000 last fall started our building fund,” said Library Director Bronna Lehmann. “They raised over 10% of the capital campaign goal in just two months.”

If you would like more information about this project or would like to get involved in the planning process, please contact Bronna Lehmann at (608) 424-1812.
