Monticello Village Board Report

The Monticello Village Board met on Wednesday, June 1, 2016. In the comment section of the meeting, Julie Shipe McClain spoke to the board about the need for professionalism and the importance of getting information to village residents. She said she had spoken to the village clerk and several board members while researching her comments.

Shipe McClain presented board members and attendees with copies of tables and a timeline outlining her research. In these documents, she noted that she had been told by trustee Steve Scanlan that New Glarus Area EMS had been asked to respond to a request for proposal. She said she emailed him asking when the requests were made, but he did not respond. She pointed out that she could not find anywhere in the various meeting minutes where the NGAEMS had been asked for information and noted that representatives from the service had been in attendance at a number of Village Board meetings. She also noted that Scanlan said that the newspaper had not contacted the Village of Monticello about the issue.* It was later learned that no requests for proposals had in fact been sent to either New Glarus Area EMS or Green County EMS.

Shipe McClain said she had been told by a number of trustees that the majority of village work is done at the committee level. She pointed out to the board that committee meetings are not listed on the village calendar, nor are agendas or minutes for committees available online. Shipe McClain said she had asked for and received the minutes for Village Board and Public Safety Committee meetings, but found them to be lacking in detail and information.

She suggested that the village’s website be updated, since the village hall hours were incorrect, and, until very recently, the Public Safety committee was not even listed under the correct name on the website. Shipe McClain also pointed out that she had been told information was not available online due to the cost of bandwith, although no bandwith costs were provided.

The board agreed to work harder to improve the details in committee minutes in order to better inform the public.

No Public Hearing Date was set for the EMS.

The board approved the second payment on the N. Monroe Street project in the amount of $471,986.08.

The Monticello Village Hall will be closed June 20-24, due to the clerk’s vacation.

*Editors note: Village President LaVerne Crooks had been emailed before the Public Safety meeting asking for his input. Crooks replied to the email saying “No decision has been made in regards to this issue, the Public Safety Committee has asked for the NG EMS to send a representative to the next Public Safety Com. on the 17th of May at 4:30 to discuss this subject.  Open meeting.”
