Belleville Police Department Celebrates National Police Week

Vicki Beiersdorf

The Belleville Police Department celebrated National Police Week by spending time with students at the Belleville Elementary School. Additionally, there was a coloring contest. Olivia Palmer, Lila Basco, Elijah Olson, Emily Gomez, and Jimena Balderas-Gamillo were winners in the contest.

The Belleville Police Department celebrated National Police Week. National Police Week runs from May 10-16. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officer Memorial Day and the week in which the date falls as Police Week.

Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, D.C., to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

In Belleville, we had a coloring contest for the Elementary and Intermediate Schools. We received 263 entries. All the pictures were great. They are displayed around the village. The winners are as follows: Olivia Palmer (K), Lila Basco (1st grade), Elijah Olson (2nd grade), Emily Gomez (3rd grade) and Chief's Award went to Jimena Balderas-Gamillo. Those winners received goodie bags from the Police Department.

We want to thank all the children and school staff for making our Police Week amazing. Chief W. Eichelkraut, Officer M. Hultine, and Officer V. Beiersdorf were able to spend the afternoon and lunch period with the K-5 and 1st grade classes on Friday. The children had a chance to ask a lot of questions and get to know us. Officer M. Hultine and Officer V. Beiersdorf went to the Intermediate School to surprise the 2nd and 3rd grade winners in their classrooms.

We would also like to thank all the citizen and businesses that have been so supportive during our special week. Thank You!!

Don't forget "Cops n' Bobbers" will be on June 13th at the Community Park, shelter 1. This event is for children K-8th grade. If you have any questions, please contact Officer V. Beiersdorf at (608) 424-3129 ext. 127.
