Village of New Glarus to Celebrate 175th+1 Anniversary

July 22, 2021

The New Glarus Chamber of Commerce and Swiss Center of North America are hosting a special weekend celebration in honor of the 175+1 anniversary of the founding of New Glarus! Originally planned for 2020, the anniversary celebrations were rescheduled to 2021 due to the pandemic. Interestingly enough, that was not the first time the anniversary had to be postponed – the centennial anniversary festivities in 1945 were also delayed a year to allow the men and women away at war to return home.

Friday, July 30th, will be the Community Picnic and Volksfest at Village Park from 4:30 p.m.-9:00 p.m. Free live Swiss music, featuring Jodlerklub, Mannerchor, Larry Daehn, D’Schwiizer Gruppe, the Nancy and Kaye Yodeling Duo, a glimpse into the Heidi Play, alphorns, flag throwers, and more will be on stage in the park from 5:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. The New Glarus Lions will have their annual BBQ fundraiser out of Fest Haus from 4:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m., and there will be bounce houses for the kids. Around 6:30 p.m., join us at the music stage to hear Swiss Consul General Bruno Ryff speak as the representative of Switzerland to the United States, followed by the singing of Happy Birthday to New Glarus and free birthday treats for all. 4th Avenue between Railroad Street and 2nd Street will be closed Friday evening to allow seating to view the fireworks at dusk – bring your camp chairs!
