News of Men In Service
January 2, 1946
S/Sgt. Virgil Erickson arrived at San Francisco last week. His wife and daughter have been living here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Marty.
Sgt. Rudolph Schneider, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Schneider, has been discharged and has joined his family in Michigan.
Capt. Huldreich Kammer has been discharged from the Army Medical Corps, in which he served in Italy. He has been at Vaughan General Hospital, Hines, Illinois, since returning from Europe. He and his wife expect to go to Cleveland, Ohio, where the doctor will be affiliated with the Cleveland Clinic.
Corp. William Muehlemann received his honorable discharge from the Army after a year and five months overseas.
Roger Hefty, Aer M 3/c, Norfolk, Virginia, spent New Year’s with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hefty.
Norman H. Disch, F 2/c, Great Lakes, Illinois, spent Christmas with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob H. Disch.
Sgt. Vivian Ingwell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilmer Ingwell, is at his home here.
Norman Marty, s 1/c, left Tuesday evening for Great Lakes after spending several days at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Marty.
Pvt. Robert Alderman sent his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Alderman, a cablegram from France, wishing them a “Merry Christmas”. His brother, Russell Alderman, who was recently discharged after nine years in the Army, recently re-enlisted at Selfridge Field, Michigan.
Pvt. Richard E. Disch returned to Fort Ben., Harrison, Indiana, where he is a cook at the A & B School of the Ordinance Branch of the Armed Service, after a nine-day Christmas leave at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Disch. Another son. Pfc. Wilbert Disch, has just sent word that he is on orders to leave for duty with the Occupation forces in Germany soon.
Corp. John D. Zimmerman, Monticello, formerly of New Glarus, received his discharge at Camp McCoy and is at his home. He entered service in 1943, was in Italy and Corsica and France. In France, he was chauffeur for Winston Churchill.
In July, 1945, he was sent to the Pacific by way of the Panama Canal and was stationed in New Guinea, Manila and Luzon since then.
Pfc Eldon Hustad Home From Europe
Pfc. Eldon Hustad, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Hustad, arrived home December 20 from Europe, on a 60-day furlough. He has been in the Army 13 months and has 30 points.
He landed at Le Havre, France in April 1945, and has one battle star to his credit.
Eldon wishes to thank The Folks Back Home for the Christmas box, the Lions Club and all who remembered him and those responsible for sending him the Post.
Now A Civilian
Second Lieutenant Kenneth Hoesly has completed 47 months of Army service and his terminal leave expires January 1.
Kenneth entered service in January 1942, served at Hunter’s Field, Georgia, nine months at Walterboro Field, South Carolina, 20 months at Camp Barkley, Texas, and 10 months at Sheppard Field, Texas. He was in the medical administrative Corps.
Pvt. Bernard Staley Ends Marine Service
Pvt. Bernard Staley received his discharge from the U.S. Marine Corps at Great Lakes, Illinois, after 20 months, 15 months overseas. He has 75 points to his credit.
Bernard entered service in April 1944, and trained at San Diego, California. In August 1944, he left for the Pacific area serving in the Russell Islands, Guadalcanal, Marshall Islands, Okinawa and the last month in Tien Tsing, China, where his work was mostly guard duty.
He is entitled to wear two battle stars, and besides general infantry duty he assisted in supplies. In the Russell Islands he made ice cream for six months.
During his absence the only home boys he met were Marshal Ingwell and Gerald Disch, who also were in the Marines.
He left China on November 1, and arrived at San Diego, California, on November 24. Before his service he was employed by the Pet Milk Company and he expects to return to the old job.
