New Glarus Women WW2 Veterans Letters to the "New Glarus Post"

June 13, 2019

From Gladys Edstrom, New York City, September 23, 1943:

Dear Mr. Theiler, Receiving the New Glarus Post is a great pleasure to me and I look forward to reading each week.

I am First Sergeant of a very large WAC company which is really doing a big job in the war effort here in New York City.

My duties of running the company keep me busy from early morning to late at night. Despite the long hours and hard work, I enjoy every minute of it.

Reading about my New Glarus friends is a real treat as anyone away from home will tell you and I think all of us owe you a note of thanks for sending the paper and keeping us posted.

Please say hello to my many students and friends and tell them that I miss them and hope to come back to see them someday when this is past history.

Sincerely,

Sgt. Gladys Edstrom

Dear Mr. Theiler, I got back from my furlough O.K. I went back by way of Canada, a very enjoyable trip. I’ve seen lots of country since being in service. On August 24 the WAC’s at this camp were sworn into the army in a group. It was beautiful sight, it took place at retreat, watching Old Glory come down after the ceremony brought tears to several. I knew then, more than ever, that the army is the only place for me. Someone asked me if Esther Palmer was stationed at Kilmer, she is not. Would you please put her address in the Post.

Thank you for the Post. I enjoy the service men’s column best of all, because I know what it’s all about.

Cpl. Emma Ehrbar,

WAC Station Det.

Camp Kilmer, New Jersey
