Monticello Dairy Queen Update

January 24, 2019

Sarah Blumer

Hello! My name is Sarah Blumer. I am the 2018-2019 Monticello Dairy Queen. My parents are Ron and Jen Blumer.

January is a great time to reflect on the past year and to make goals for the year ahead. For dairy farmers, 2018 wasn't a very good year. According to the Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection, Wisconsin lost 638 dairy farms in 2018. That's a 7.25% decline in our dairy farms and the biggest drop since 2004.

Traditionally, people make resolutions at the beginning of a new year. Please join me in adding resolutions that support the dairy industry to your list for 2019. There are many easy ways to support our farmers by incorporating dairy products in your everyday life.

In Green County, we are fortunate to have more than 10 local cheese factories. Visit a factory near you and buy some of the high-quality, award-winning cheese products that are produced locally. By buying cheese from local sources, you support not only our county's cheese factories but also the dairy farmers who ship their milk to the factories.

Another way to help dairy farmers is to consume more dairy products like milk, butter, ice cream, yogurt, and many others. Consuming more dairy products is beneficial to farmers, and it is beneficial to you and your health. Dairy is considered nutrient-rich because it serves as a good source of calcium and vitamin D, as well as protein and other essential nutrients. Dairy also provides phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, and vitamins. To meet daily calcium requirements, most people should have two to three cups of milk or servings of dairy products each day. Getting the recommended three servings of dairy per day can help build bone mass, leading to improved bone health throughout the life cycle.

Dairy farmers need our help, so please join me in resolving to support the dairy industry in the New Year.

Once again, my name is Sarah Blumer and I am the 2018-2019 Monticello Dairy Queen. On behalf of myself and the Green County Ag Chest, I would like to wish you a happy and prosperous new year. Thank you!
