Madison Jazz Society to Sponsor Free Year-End Party on June 7

The Madison Jazz Society will hold its annual year-end party to kick off its fourth decade of presenting and preserving jazz in Madison on Sunday, June 7, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the Coliseum Bar, 232 E. Olin Avenue, Madison. MJS has been presenting and preserving jazz in Madison since 1984. Music at this free event will be provided by Madison’s Johnny Chimes and Gatur

A career musician for 35+ years, Johnny Chimes is one of the most versatile musicians in the Midwest. Although a resident of Madison, his pumping left hand might as well as reside in Louisiana. With influences ranging from Leon Russell and Mose Allison, to Dr. John and Professor Longhair, Chimes is a jambalaya of boogie-woogie piano, finger-style guitar and sweet southern soul-laced vocals. Disciples of vintage piano know him primarily for his prowess on the ivories.

Instantly transporting his audience into the heart of Bourbon Street, Chimes, either as a solo pianist or with his band, has the ability to kick up a good old fashioned Louisiana “get down” in just about any situation. His groove is deep and infectious. Chimes entertains regularly at Louisianne’s Restaurant in Middleton and at various clubs and eateries in and around the capital city.

He has also shared the stage with Louisiana “luminaries” such as the Radiators, the Iguanas, Bonerama, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and Gino Delafose. In 2004, he was invited to perform at the opening night ceremonies for Madison’s Overture Center. ESPN had Chimes as a featured act when the Outdoor Games came to Madison.

He has taken the stage at countless blues festivals. Author Gary Knowles, formerly of Madison Magazine, observed, “Johnny Chimes is on his way to becoming a Madison music legend.”

Joining Chimes on June 7th will be Eric Koppa, saxophone; LaCouir Yancey, bass & vocals and Al Falaschi, drums & vocals.

The day will include a short business meeting to elect officers and board members for two-year terms. Door prizes will be awarded all afternoon. The event is free and the public is welcome to attend. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m.
