Shepherd of the Hills Celebrates Fifty Years

The photo above was taken before the first service at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in 1966.
Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church plans to reenact some of the history from their very first worship on Sunday, October 16, 2016.
On October 16, 1966, folding chairs were moved into the sanctuary the day before that first service. The organ had arrived during the week and was stored in the parsonage garage until it was hand carried to the church. The entire ground surrounding the new building was nothing but clay and mud. A path of cardboard from the packing surrounding the new chairs was salvaged, and pegged into the ground to provide a walk across the empty lot to the east door of the church. The altar was a Monroe table skirted with brown paper and the candle holders were borrowed.
All are welcome to join us as we celebrate a trip down memory lane for some and a new experience for others. Both the 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services will be traditional services, using some of the liturgy and hymns from the first service. If you have period clothing from 1966, please wear and make this step back 50 years even more enjoyable.
On Sunday, October 23, 1966, the first Sunday School classes began with members taking on the roles of leaders. Shepherd of the Hills is blessed to this day to have Herb and Emma Jean Nelson and Lennys Luchsinger who, as charter members, have devoted many years as parish educators. A short program will be held during the fellowship brunch in honor of former superintendents and teachers. The brunch immediately follows the 8:00 a.m. service. The Sunday School children will be playing the bells during both services; second service begins at 10:30 a.m. We are hoping that many of our past and our present Sunday School leaders will be present.
Shepherd of the Hills has more anniversary celebrations planned for the end of 2016 and through May of 2017, when there will be a special dedication service. If you have any questions or would like to submit a memory or share a story, please feel free to contact any one of the following committee members: Linda Hiland, Donna Anderson, Sue Bonacker, Lennys Luchsinger or Conni Bigler.
