Let's Work Together to End Voter Suppression

April 21, 2022

Dear Editor,

On April 5th when I went to vote in the spring election, I brought along my wife’s absentee ballot. The Village Clerk told me that in order for her vote to be counted, Dawn had to deliver her ballot in person. The Instructions for Absentee Voters state: “You can mail it back, drop it off at your municipal clerk’s office, or drop it off at your polling place.” Nowhere do the instructions specify that the ‘drop-off’ must be in person. This deceitful change defeats the purpose and intent of absentee voting, which so many of us have used during the past two years of COVID.

This state-wide deviation from previous election rules was the result of a controversial ruling by a Waukesha county judge and is currently under appeal. The Wisconsin Supreme Court conveniently delayed hearing this case until after the spring election.

Consider this a cautionary tale. I went back home and brought Dawn to Village Hall, where she was allowed to vote. The Clerk and election workers were all very courteous, apologetic, and accommodating. Let’s all work together to end all forms of voter suppression. Keep on voting, no matter the obstacles!

Sincerely,

Larry and Dawn Hayslett,

Belleville, WI
